The Virginia Beach Public Art & Placemaking Program, a program of the Cultural Affairs Department, has grown over the past 20 years into a regional standard-bearer for excellence in the public art arena. Since 2000, more than 30 new pieces have been added at sites throughout the city, and there has been a growing investment in temporary and permanent public art projects.
The City of Virginia Beach's Cultural Affairs Department offers a public exhibition opportunity for serious visual and fine craft artists exhibiting two-dimensional works. Exhibits are rotated on a quarterly basis. The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts Gallery is located on the second and third-floor lobbies. This location offers great exposure for artists seeking to reach local patrons and visitors to this multi-use facility.
The City of Virginia Beach seeks a professional artist or artist team, living and working in Virginia, to design, fabricate, and install a temporary art installation utilizing the pre-existing steel structure and cables on site at 300 Atlantic Avenue, in the Rudee Loop area of Virginia Beach.
Three artists or artist teams will be selected for the rotating temporary art installation program. Each rotation will last for 11 months, allowing up to four weeks for install/uninstall. The project will conclude in three years or when development of the area begins, whichever occurs first. Rotations (Installation #2, Installation #3) are pending funding for the correlated fiscal year.
This RFQ will commission the artist or artist team for Installation #1. Application deadline is Friday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. Email ebrookover@vbgov.com if you have any questions.
